This matcha scoop (chashaku) in natural brown bamboo is made by hand in Takayama, Japan, by 24th-generation chasen-master Kubo Masaki, dubbed a National Living Treasure for his skills.

A chashaku ('tea scoop') is a traditional Japanese tea utensil for measuring out a recommended serving of matcha (2-4 grams depending on whether you're making Usucha or Koicha). A Chashaku can be carved from several materials, including beautiful and rare woods or even ivory but is most often made of bamboo. This one is made from Shizuoka wood that has been aged for 3 years.

Chashaku are appreciated for their beauty and functionality, and special ones are bestowed with poetic names ('gomei') to give them a seasonal identity.

This particular type of bamboo is preferred by the Omotesenke school of tea ceremony, but can be used by anyone to measure approximately 1.5-2 grams of Matcha powder.

Artisan: Sabun Kubo, 24th Generation Matcha Tools Maker.

Made in: Takayama, Nara, Japan.

Usage Instructions:  Each scoop of matcha should be rounded, and reaching just the point where the chashaku starts to bend.

Care Instructions: Wipe with a dry cloth after every use, do not wash as you might lose the delicate bend of the bamboo.
